UK GIBA Network+ Seminar Series (29 May 2026)

Discover the latest advances in understanding of the gut-immune-brain axis in the UK GIBA Network+ Seminar Series.

These online sessions feature presenters from across our five working groups.

Date: Friday 29th May

Time: 12.30pm – 1.30pm

Speakers: Dr Lewis Mattin

Title:Fill My Belly to Empty Belly: ECR to Lab Lead in 3.6 years and counting!

Position: Senior Lecturer in Human Physiology and Nutrition

University: University of Westminster, London

GIBA working group: 4: How do the brain and gut communicate to regulate food intake and shape eating behaviours?

Having completed a PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University, focusing on appetite regulation and exercise-induced gastrointestinal changes, Lewis contributed to research at the intersection of nutrition, physiology, and endocrinology, with a specific interest in the gastrointestinal system.

Since 2023, as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster, Lewis has been researching how physical activity affects gastrointestinal function and appetite signalling, in several different projects, such as Differences in nutrient sensing within a South Asian population, Metabolic fluctuations in ultra-endurance cyclists, Gastrointestinal inflammatory changes during the female menstrual cycle, and finally, how increasing fibre might promote healthy ageing.

These projects provide a deeper understanding of areas such as gastrointestinal resilience, weight management, ethnic variations, and female physiology. This research employs a multidisciplinary, human-centred approach, grounded in exercise science.
